You are probably
here because of the book Their Eyes Were Watching
God. you're right; it's an amazing book. and so are her other
books (yes, there are others), which i am sure you will read
soon.
zora neale hurston is one of the greatest
writers/ anthropologists of the 20th century. she could write about the most
ordinary things and make them infinitely gorgeous. in zora neale hurston's
books, the reader empathizes, loves, hates, and mourns, because zora makes her
characters so real and human it is impossible not to. she has the rare power to
write fiction that is timeless and vibrant. the relationships, the trauma, the
power struggles, everything just sears itself into your
consciousness.
this page has been seen in over

people have made its success possible. shoutouts to Dr. H.E.Newsum of the ohio state university department of black studies, Lisa Pillow, of
the ohio state black
studies library, everyone who sent in their essays (i promise to
will get them done soon), and everyone who sent comments and suggestions. to the
teachers who introduce us to zora, thank you; you have enriched our lives
forever.
all of you who have written papers/ essays/
theses on zora (you know who you are) and have yet to send them in, i will
gladly publish them here. feel free to email them, whatever the length, to me,

give your essays a published
future on the internet, instead of a wrinkled future in the bottom of your

Eatonville's 10th Annual
Zora Neale Hurston Festival is in
January- if you go, please send a review. zora's niece, doctoral candidate Lucy Hurston, received her
graduate sociology degree last year at ohio
state. she has signed a book contract with Doubleday to produce a work
entitled Traces of Zora: Shared Family Memories of Zora Neale Hurston
very soon. and i don't know if it will be her next project or not, but yes,
Oprah Winfrey bought the movie rights to Their Eyes Were Watching
God.
the Zora
Bulletin Board 1.2 is ready to commence discussions. look at
it, post a message or a
question. who knows, maybe a community will spring up. please bear with the
slight problems until a better option appears (slight problems: there is an
advertisement on the bulletin board, and we can't thread
messages).
i really cannot describe zora's writing
effectively, so you should check out a sample. have a look around, make yourself
at home.
"Mama exhorted her children at every opportunity to "jump at de sun." We might not land on the sun, but at least we would get off the ground."
"Love, I find, is like singing. Everybody can do enough to satisfy themselves, though it may not impress the neighbors as being very much."
"Those that don't got it, can't show it. Those that got it, can't hide it."
"Nothing that God ever made is the same thing to more than one person. That is natural. There is no single face in nature, because every eye that looks upon it, sees it from its own angle. So every man's spice-box seasons his own food."
"I want a busy life, a just mind and a timely death."
