Taking America's Pulse, research from NCCJ, by Dr. Tom W. Smith
"Taking America's Pulse II", a national survey funded by Bank of America, is a
revealing report on attitudes Americans have about each other. The report measures,
among other things, how Americans perceive satisfaction with various aspects on life;
racial, religious and ethnic tensions; attitudes about race relations; governmental priorities;
trends in intergroup relations; interracial contact and experiences of discrimination by
race and/or ethnicity.
The National Conference for Community and Justice, founded in 1927 as The National
Conference of Christians and Jews, is a human relations organization dedicated to fighting bias,
bigotry and racism in America. NCCJ promotes understanding and respect among all races,
religions and cultures through advocacy, conflict resolution and education.
The survey was conducted by Dr. Tom W. Smith, the Director of the General Social Survey
at the National Opinion Research Center, University of Chicago.
